Hotboxing. Ahhh, now, that’s a phrase from my university hay-days that I look back upon fondly! Ngl, I’m fully on the vaping train nowadays…but I often wonder: did hotboxing actually get me higher? Was I going to be stoned smoking that much kush anyway, or was this just a place-bo effect of already being super baked? Can you even hotbox with a vape as well? I have so many questions!
So, let's take a step outside our hotbox and figure this out together!
What is hotboxing?
Hotboxing refers to filling a condensed, unventilated area with smoke, with the intention of breathing in the lingering smoke around to achieve a secondhand smoking high. Picture a sauna that you instead absorb the benefits from and not expel the smoke.
It gained popularity within cannabis culture by none other than Cheech and Chong (Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong), the iconic stoner duo who pioneered the stoner comedy genre in the late 1900s, in the 70's to be precise.
While many folks associate hotboxing with being in a car, bathrooms are another popular choice for hotboxing. Any small space that you can easily close off and fill up with cannabis smoke is fair game. More daring cannabis lovers might take up hotboxing a large room with a large group of people and lots of weed.
Does it get you more high?
According to a John Hopkins school of Medicine study, 'Extreme' exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke, hotboxing, in fact, does get you high without the need to dragging a J, bong etc. So, at the very minimum, we can “draw” (or not 😉) that hotboxing is an effective method of gaining an effect without having to pull from the joint itself.
Combining the smoke of a joint, bong, or blunt with cannabis already in the air secondhand is going to be a welcome overload of stonedness for some people but isn’t always recommended for newer smokers as the combo can be overbearing.
More conclusive studies will have to be made; however, it is likely that the lack of oxygen will result in lightheadedness that is to be noticed by even the most seasoned of smokers. I absolutely don’t recommend depriving yourself fully of oxygen, so be sure to crack a window during your sesh if you feel adventurous enough to try hotboxing out!
Can you hotbox with a vape?
Hotboxing is as loud and as dank as the ganja you’re smoking. It’s extremely hard to hotbox with a vape, as vapor will be far less lingering and thick than smoke produced through dry herb. It begs the question, is that really a bad thing if one of the main draws of vaping is remaining inconspicuous and discreet? Hotboxing is as loud and as dank as the ganja you’re smoking.
I highly recommend venturing off into high-oxygen terrain with your Piccolo or Crossover, or you can consider pairing it with your hotbox sesh. Nobody is stopping you from pulling out your vape in an already overloaded smoke sesh, and if you need to take a break outside with a smoother hit, we’ve got ya covered.
Stay safe, remember to breathe some O2, and as always,
Stay high.

disclaimer: we do not condone smoking reefer and operating a motor vehicle.. although its the most common method to hotbox (thanks cheech and chong).
