A common question we’ve seen pop up on our feed, especially on Reddit, is,
"Can I bring my Dab Pen on a plane?”
The straightforward answer for Canadian-based stoners, is a resounding yes! You can travel with a modest amount of cannabis, separate or attached to your dabbing device(s) on a plane. American stoners, however, will have to be considerably more cautious but are also able to travel with their trusty pen; provided they do not bring any cannabis-containing product on the flight with them, and clean their devices appropriately from any Cannabis residue. Additionally, you cannot use these devices on a plane, not unlike e-cigarette products.
Canadians
In Canada, you can transport up to a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis on any domestic flight, which includes any combo of 510 cartridge(s), concentrate(s), flower, pre-rolls, and edibles; so long as your personal cannabis travel package is under or equal to the 30-gram carrying limit.
To verify you are not above this limit, ensure that you have closely read the labelled quantity of dried Cannabis found on the packaging of 510 cartridges and other concentrate/ dab products as it varies in quantity on a package-to-package basis. 510 cartridges and other dab-related products tend to label and contain their use of dried cannabis quantity in the range of 3g – 7g, so you’re most certainly okay if you bring a modest handful of carts, or dabs on a plane to last the length of your domestic trip.
For Canadians opting to bring their own products that are un-labelled, do so at your own caution. Weigh your product(s), measure your dab(s), and bring a small amount if you’re unsure. We recommend that dispensary-bought products include a receipt where available, as this is easy proof that your dabbing / 710 product(s) do not exceed 30 grams; since dispensaries cannot legally sell you receipts exceeding the 30-gram limit and will help you avoid any confusion you may have. You cannot, however, travel outside of Canada with Cannabis products, and the following rules for Americans will apply to anyone travelling out of the northern borders.
Lastly, it’s important to note that the Slash or Piccolo are size-friendly to planes, but the Crossover would likely be treated similar to a bong or large dab rig, so pack accordingly and responsibly!
Americans / International Travelers
On the flipside, in nearly all cases (outside of Canada), you cannot domestically fly on a plane with any form of THC/ CBD Cannabis product, but you can legally fly with the device in your carry-on. If you are based in the United States, bringing a dab pen on a plane can be subject to harsh regulations and policies set by the TSA. TSA prohibits the transport of Cannabis and Cannabis-related products in carry-on and checked bags. This is because Cannabis is still classified as a Schedule I controlled substance at the federal level, regardless of its legal status in certain states. Thus, as an American, you can transport squeaky clean dab Pens and devices, but they cannot continue any residue of THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, or you risk confiscation or, in the worst case scenario, detainment.
We advise you to keep your Dab Pen at home unless it is unused or cleaned with great care, as it may be lower risk to await your final-arrival destination to purchase your goodies at a dispensary. This is then the perfect occasion to consider upgrading. Get yourself a new Piccolo–perfect for travel! Piccolo is airplane-friendly as it doesn't fall under vaping or tobacco product restrictions. The Crossover, on the other hand, is a travel pleasure only for your Canadian counterparts.
We think it’s “plane” wrong that you can’t do more and hope these laws become relaxed in the near future as the US moves towards a promising federally legal future.
Should you travel with a Dab pen?
Ultimately, you can travel with your Dab pen, but should you? That’s situational.
- If you’re travelling within Canada as a tourist or citizen, it feels daunting, but you can save precious travel costs by bringing your own goodies with you. Just keep in mind that you cannot bring Cannabis over the Canadian borders, regardless of whether it was legally purchased, as you are subject to international law(s) once you leave the Canadian domain.
- If you’re travelling outside Canada, it is often recommended that you use your personal discretion and avoid taking products that may contain cannabis to give your airport experience peace of mind. The American market is still state-driven, and you should view every trip like travelling to a non-420-friendly country and leave your trusty Penjamin safe and sound at home for you to happily return to.
